Why pointing a rocket at a planet won't get you there

Flying in Space is Weird (Spaceflight Simulator) · 4:59 · Video: Digital Astronaut · Watch at the source

In short: Movies often depict space travel as simple steering, but the reality of orbital mechanics is far more complex. This video uses a flight simulator to demonstrate why traditional piloting logic fails in the vacuum of space.

In cinema, rockets are often portrayed like airplanes, where pointing toward a destination results in arrival. In reality, using conventional rocket fuel without understanding orbital dynamics means you will simply exhaust your propellant without reaching your target.

Using the game Spaceflight Simulator, the creator demonstrates the difficulty of returning astronauts to Earth. While atmospheric reentry is famously dangerous, the video highlights that maneuvering out of orbit to begin that descent is an equally complex challenge that defies common intuition.
