Europe's quest for precision: the launch of Galileo satellites 15 through 18

Galileo satellites 15–18 prepared for liftoff · 3:10 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: Watch the final preparations and liftoff of four critical satellites from French Guiana. This mission marks a major step toward establishing Europe's independent global satellite navigation system.

This timelapse captures the deployment of Galileo satellites 15, 16, 17, and 18 via the Ariane 5 launcher, flight VA233. On 17 November 2016, these satellites departed from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, playing a vital role in speeding up the deployment of the European Union's independent global navigation network. While the European Commission oversees the programme, the European Space Agency (ESA) manages the technical development and deployment. The goal for the full system, including spares, was to reach completion by 2020.
