In short: Sending everything humans need from Earth to the Moon is becoming prohibitively expensive. To make lunar exploration sustainable, agencies are shifting focus toward In-Situ Resource Utilisation—the practice of mining and processing local materials to create oxygen, water, and fuel directly on the lunar surface.

The era of 'been there, done that' exploration is evolving into a quest for permanent sustainability. While the Apollo missions provided foundational knowledge, they were limited by the enormous resources required to transport every gram of life support from Earth. Today, the European Space Agency (ESA) aims to move beyond these costly models by establishing partnerships with commercial businesses to create a viable space economy.

The core mechanism of this shift is In-Situ Resource Utilisation (ISRU). Instead of carrying heavy payloads for fuel and breathing air, missions will invest in technology capable of turning indigenous lunar materials into critical resources. Satellite data has already confirmed the presence of oxygen and water ice on the Moon, which serve as primary targets for extraction.

The technical challenges are significant. Extracting water from regolith or solid ice can be more laborious than mining plain rock, as permafrost can sometimes be harder to penetrate. Furthermore, producing rocket propellant through water electrolysis requires massive amounts of power and cryogenic storage equipment. To overcome these hurdles, the ESA is currently inviting service providers to participate in a study for an ISRU Demonstrator Mission, aiming to turn the Moon into a springboard for humanity's future in deep space.

Ultimately, ISRU matters because it reduces the mass and cost of space architectures. By minimizing what must be launched from Earth, we can transition from short-term visits to long-term operations, potentially using lunar water as feedstock for life support, food production, and industrial processes.
