A Russian cargo ship departs the station for a fiery end in the Pacific
In short: The unpiloted Progress 53 has undocked from the Zvezda Service Module. Having dropped off almost three tons of provisions at the International Space Station this past November, the vessel is now plummeting toward a hot reentry into Earth's atmosphere to incinerate above the Pacific Ocean.
Progress 53 left on June 9 to achieve two goals. Beyond its routine mission cycle, the undocking clears the aft port of the Zvezda Service Module. This vacancy is essential for the arrival of the European Space Agency’s final Automated Transfer Vehicle cargo craft, which is scheduled to dock in August.
While the Progress 53 completes its cycle, the International Space Station is currently undergoing a complex crew swap as part of Expedition 75. This involves 11 crew members managing the logistics of life in microgravity. Since October 1, four fresh station members—NASA's Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, Canada's Josh Kutryk, and Roscosmos's Sergey Teteryatnikov—have been stationed there.
Simultaneously, the SpaceX Crew-12 quartet is preparing for their return to Earth. This team, including NASA’s Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, ESA’s Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos’s Andrey Fedyaev, has been aboard since February 14. Their departure is scheduled for 8:05 a.m. At 11:34 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, October 7, a Pacific Ocean splashdown is scheduled. on Thursday, October 8, after spending nearly eight months in orbit.
The station's logistics continue with the upcoming release of Northrop Grumman’s uncrewed Cygnus XL. Attached to the Unity module since April 13, the ship will be released using the Canadarm2 robotic arm. This activity is part of a continuous cycle of resupply and crew rotation that maintains the orbital outpost's research capabilities.
