Uranus is a spinning top tilted over and twirling backward
In short: For decades, our knowledge of the outer solar system relied on a single flyby from the 1980s. Now, the James Webb Space Telescope is peeling back the veil on the ice giants, revealing vivid auroras and a chaotic magnetic history that challenges everything we thought we knew about planetary formation.
Uranus and Neptune are often overlooked because of their distance from the sun and visually bland appearances. Until recently, our primary data came from NASA’s Voyager 2, which reached Neptune on August 25, 1989. While historic, that single flyby provided only a brief glimpse into the ice giants' depths. Furthermore, Voyager 2's observations of Uranus were hampered by a solar storm that temporarily squashed the planet's magnetic field, limiting the scientific data gathered over 40 years ago.
New observations from the James Webb Space Telescope's NIRSpec instrument are changing this. During a 15-hour period in late January 2025, Webb captured multiple views of Uranus, revealing vivid auroras that appear as rosy splotches. These features are not just beautiful; they allow scientists to track temperatures and dynamics in the planet's upper atmosphere. Because Uranus has a tilted magnetic field, these auroras provide a unique window into the planet's atmospheric behavior.
Uranus is a celestial outlier. It is one of only two major planets orbiting the sun in a retrograde (clockwise) motion. Most strikingly, it possesses an extreme axial tilt where its rotation axis is almost perpendicular to its orbital motion. This 'spinning top' orientation likely resulted from a massive planetary collision early in the solar system's history. Such an impact also helped produce the planet's irregular, turbulent magnetic field, which sits out of sync with its rotation and core, resulting in 42 Earth years of seasonal change.
