In short: Monitoring our home planet requires more than just cameras in orbit; it demands a massive infrastructure of technology and international cooperation. NASA recently appointed a new director to oversee this complex portfolio, bringing decades of experience in satellite deployment and national security to the agency's headquarters.

Dr. Karen St. Germain joins NASA's Science Mission Directorate as the Director of the Earth Science Division on June 8. In this role, she provides the executive leadership and strategic direction for the agency's entire Earth Science portfolio. This encompasses everything from the initial development of new technologies and applied science research to the actual implementation and daily operation of missions designed to monitor our world.

Before her move to NASA, Dr. St. Germain held high-level positions at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Two significant satellite initiatives, namely the Geostationary Operational Environment Satellite – R series and the Joint Polar Satellite System, fell under her oversight for creation and launch. Overseeing the Space Weather Follow-On and COSMIC-2 mission, she simultaneously designed upcoming technologies intended to upgrade and succeed existing infrastructure.

Her background is deeply rooted in large-scale systems architecture and multi-organizational programs of national importance. This includes a period from 2006 to 2011 where she oversaw system performance for the Suomi-NPP system. Additionally, she spent years within the Department of Defense, where she led a 2014 strategic portfolio review to address evolving challenges in the space domain and managed portfolios for space-based environmental monitoring and missile warning systems.

By combining her experience in academic research at institutions like the Naval Research Laboratory with her expertise in transitioning new technologies into operational systems, Dr. St. Germain is tasked with integrating NASA's Earth Science missions with those of commercial, interagency, and international partners. Her goal is to improve the products and services provided to global citizens to better understand our changing planet.
