Simulating the psychological toll of a 520-day journey to Mars

More than 105 days for Mars 500 · 4:56 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: A crew of six is currently living inside a spacecraft mockup in Moscow. This video explores the Mars 500 mission, a high-fidelity simulation designed to test human endurance in extreme isolation.

The Mars 500 experiment aims to replicate the duration of a real voyage to the red planet, which is estimated to last 520 days. As of September 15, the crew has surpassed 105 days of isolation, exceeding the duration of the previous preparatory experience conducted the year prior.

The simulation takes place at the Russian Institute of Biomedical Problems (IBMP). By housing six participants—including two Europeans—in a confined mockup, researchers can study the physiological and psychological effects of long-term space travel before actual missions begin.
