A diplomatic gala marks 50 years of human spaceflight
In short: Watch how American and Russian space officials gathered to honor two pivotal milestones in orbital history: the first human in space and the dawn of the shuttle era.
The celebration, hosted by U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Beyrle, honored the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin becoming the first human in space. It also marked the 30th anniversary of STS-1, the inaugural mission of the U.S. Space Shuttle program.
Led by NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, the gala served as the culmination of a week-long series of tributes to these twin milestones in aerospace history.
