Astronauts perform critical repairs to maintain the International Space Station's vital systems

In short: Maintaining a laboratory in orbit requires more than just scientific research. From replacing faulty voltage regulators to repairing robotic limbs, astronauts must step outside into the vacuum to ensure the station's electrical and mechanical systems remain fully operational for future missions.

Space station maintenance often involves high-stakes repairs to essential hardware. In one instance, NASA Flight Engineers Reid Wiseman and Barry Wilmore conducted a spacewalk on October 15 to replace a Sequential Shunt Unit. This voltage regulation device had failed in May, disabling one of the station's eight power channels. By replacing the unit, the crew successfully restored the station's electrical output to its full capacity. This specific mission marked the second time Wiseman and Wilmore had exited the station in two weeks. This excursion was also the 183rd spacewalk performed to support the assembly and upkeep of the orbital outpost.

Robotic maintenance is another critical aspect of station upkeep. On June 30, 2026, Expedition 74 flight engineers Chris Williams and Jessica Meir performed a seven-hour, 20-minute spacewalk to replace a wrist joint on the Canadarm2 robotic arm. This repair was necessitated after the arm malfunctioned on May 27, drawing elevated motor current without moving as expected. The replacement joint, designated as no. 5, was installed to ensure the arm's continued functionality. Following the repair, Mission Control in Houston successfully powered up the arm to verify its connectivity. Ground controllers also planned to move the robotic limb during subsequent system checkouts.

These excursions are part of a long-term strategy for station assembly and maintenance. The Canadarm2, an 18-meter (58-foot) long arm, has been in regular use since its installation in April 2001. Because the system was designed with replaceable components, maintenance is considered a normal part of its continuous operation. Such efforts support the station's ongoing reconfiguration, including preparing for new docking adapters for commercial crew vehicles later this decade. The faulty component will be brought back to Earth for inspection and potential refurbishment. This ongoing maintenance ensures the station remains ready for upcoming commercial crew vehicle arrivals.
