How Astronauts Repaired Critical Power and Navigation Systems on the International Space Station

Suni and Aki's Spacewalk Success · 46:16 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: This video covers the successful spacewalk by Suni Williams and Aki Hoshide to restore power distribution and robotic capabilities on the International Space Station. It provides a look at the technical challenges of orbital maintenance, including overcoming hardware malfunctions in the vacuum of space.

During their September 5 mission, Suni Williams and Aki Hoshide completed a 6-hour, 28-minute spacewalk to address critical station infrastructure. The primary objective was the installation of a replacement Main Bus Switching Unit, which manages power flow from the solar arrays to the station's laboratory components. This task required the astronauts to clean and lubricate bolts and posts that had previously caused issues.

Beyond power systems, the team successfully replaced a camera on the Canadarm2 robotic arm, a task that had been delayed during a prior spacewalk due to a frozen bolt. Later operations in January 2025 saw Williams and Nick Hague perform further maintenance, including replacing a rate gyro assembly for orientation control, repairing light filters on the NICER X-ray telescope, and upgrading docking adapter components.
