Why a single stuck valve forced astronauts into the void
In short: A mechanical glitch on the International Space Station (ISS) turned a routine maintenance task into a high-stakes repair mission. When a cooling pump failed, NASA had to send astronauts into the vacuum of space to swap out hardware, highlighting the delicate balance between human intervention and orbital engineering.
The crisis began on December 11 when an internal valve in one of the ISS's external coolant pumps became stuck in an incorrect position. This malfunction affected Loop A of the station’s Active Thermal Control System, causing temperatures in the cooling lines to drop unexpectedly. Because this system is responsible for circulating ammonia outside the station to regulate the temperature of both internal and external equipment, the failure posed a significant risk to the station's operational integrity.
To rectify the issue, Expedition 38 astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Mike Hopkins conducted a series of spacewalks beginning on December 21. The primary objective was to remove and replace the degraded pump module located at the center of the Starboard 1 truss segment. These extravehicular activities required precise coordination; for instance, the installation of the replacement module was delayed by one day to allow the crew time to resize a spare spacesuit for Mastracchio after a configuration issue was detected in his primary suit during airlock repressurization.
The complexity of these repairs is underscored by the logistical shifts required to accommodate them. NASA postponed the arrival of Orbital Sciences' Cygnus spacecraft to mid-January to ensure the crew could focus entirely on the pump repair. Furthermore, while a configuration issue with Mastracchio's suit was identified—specifically regarding potential water entry into the sublimator—NASA flight control confirmed it was unrelated to previous leaks and that the astronauts remained safe throughout their 5-hour and 28-minute excursion.
