Testing the logistics of orbital delivery with the Antares rocket
In short: NASA is preparing to test a critical piece of its commercial space infrastructure. This briefing explains how the Antares rocket will demonstrate the delivery of cargo to orbit, a key step in supporting the International Space Station.
On April 16, NASA briefed the media on a demonstration flight for Orbital Sciences Corporation's Antares rocket. Between April 17 and 21, Orbital's inaugural COTS Program flight is slated for departure from Wallops Flight Facility's Pad-0A at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport.
The flight aims to demonstrate the Antares launch system by delivering a simulated Cygnus cargo craft into orbit. While this specific mission uses a simulation, the actual Cygnus craft is designed to transport cargo to the International Space Station.
