A sudden leak in a helmet forced an early end to a critical repair mission

Space Station Crew Restores Full Power to the Complex During a Shortened Spacewalk · 12:49 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: When NASA flight engineer Tim Kopra felt water pooling in his helmet, a vital mission to restore power to the International Space Station had to be cut short. This unexpected complication turned a routine hardware replacement into a high-stakes lesson in orbital safety.

On January 15, during Expedition 46, NASA’s Tim Kopra and ESA’s Tim Peake ventured outside the International Space Station for a mission of critical importance. Their objective was to replace a voltage regulator box located on the station's starboard truss. This hardware, known as a Sequential Shunt Unit, had failed three months earlier, causing the loss of one of the electrical channels used to route power to the station's various systems.

The mission was intended to be a standard maintenance excursion, but it was interrupted by an unexpected physiological and technical complication. Kopra reported a small amount of water accumulating inside his helmet, an issue that necessitated the early termination of the spacewalk. The excursion lasted 4 hours and 43 minutes before the crew made an orderly return to the Quest airlock.

Despite the sudden change in plans, the crew remained safe. Upon returning to the airlock, the engineers removed their suits for a thorough inspection and analysis to understand the source of the moisture. While the mission was shortened, the technical significance of the repair remained: the successful replacement of the unit restored full power to the station's laboratory complex.

This particular spacewalk marked a milestone in the station's history, serving as the 192nd excursion in support of the complex's assembly and maintenance. For the individuals involved, it was a moment of personal significance, representing the third spacewalk of Kopra’s career and the very first for Peake.
