NASA renames a historic spaceflight facility to honor the legacy of Neil Armstrong
In short: NASA has officially renamed its Operations and Checkout Building at the Kennedy Space Center after the late Apollo 11 astronaut. This facility remains central to the agency's future exploration goals, bridging the gap between the historic moon landings and upcoming missions to deep space.
On July 21, 2014, NASA held a ceremony to rename the Operations and Checkout Building in memory of Neil Armstrong, who died in 2012. The event featured key figures from the Apollo era, including Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin, and Jim Lovell, alongside current International Space Station crew members Steve Swanson and Reid Wiseman.
The building served as a critical hub during the Apollo program, where teams prepared and verified the lunar, command, and service modules. Today, the site is repurposed for the assembly and preparation of the Orion spacecraft, which NASA intends to utilize for crewed missions to an asteroid in the 2020s and eventually to Mars in the 2030s.
