The crew of Artemis II has arrived to prepare for lunar orbit
Four astronauts have gathered at Florida's Kennedy Space Center, marking a pivotal moment for NASA. As they prepare for a historic test flight around the Moon, the mission carries more than just scientific goals; it carries a small, plush symbol of humanity's journey into zero gravity.
The Artemis II mission represents a significant milestone for NASA, serving as the first crewed flight of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the Orion spacecraft. The crew, consisting of NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, alongside Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, arrived at the Kennedy Space Center on Friday, March 27. This mission is designed to test the systems necessary for future lunar exploration and to establish the groundwork for eventual human missions to Mars.
While the technical complexities of the SLS and Orion are immense, the crew has also brought a more personal passenger: a zero gravity indicator named "Rise." Designed by Lucas Ye of Mountain View, California, the small plush item was selected from a global competition that saw over 2,600 submissions from more than 50 countries. The design was inspired by the famous "Earthrise" photograph captured during the Apollo 8 mission. The selection process was rigorous, with the crew narrowing 25 finalists down to five top designs, which included entries from Finland, Peru, Canada, and the United States.
As the launch window approaches, the crew's schedule is focused on mission readiness. This includes reviewing launch day timelines, conducting medical checkouts, and participating in mission activity preparations. NASA is currently targeting a launch no earlier than Wednesday, April 1, with a specific two-hour window opening at 6:24 p.m. EDT. Additional launch opportunities are being monitored through Monday, April 6. The mission will be overseen by key leadership, including NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman and CSA President Lisa Campbell.
