NASA's Orion spacecraft begins its journey home from deep space lunar orbit

The Artemis I mission marks a milestone in deep space exploration. This video covers the spacecraft's departure from a distant retrograde orbit around the moon, a critical maneuver in testing the integrated systems designed for future human spaceflight.

On December 1, NASA initiated the first of two maneuvers to exit lunar orbit, known as the distant retrograde orbit departure burn. This follows the spacecraft's arrival in that orbit on November 25, where it spent time testing systems within a deep space environment.

Artemis I serves as the inaugural integrated test for NASA's exploration infrastructure, specifically evaluating the Orion spacecraft, the Space Launch System rocket, and the ground systems at Kennedy Space Center. The mission began with a launch from Launch Complex 39B on November 16.
