Why NASA’s SpaceX Crew-11 is returning to Earth earlier than planned
After five months aboard the International Space Station, the SpaceX Crew-11 mission is preparing for an unscheduled undocking. This video covers the crew's departure, the final preparations inside the station, and the medical concern that prompted an early return.
The SpaceX Crew-11 mission, including NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, JAXA's Kimiya Yui, and Roscosmos' Oleg Platonov, is set to undock from the Harmony module's space-facing port. While the crew has spent approximately five months in orbit, NASA announced on January 8 that the mission would return earlier than originally intended due to a stable medical concern involving a crew member currently aboard the station.
Before departure, the crew focused on critical tasks: packing cargo, transferring hardware, and reviewing return procedures. Commander Cardman even trained for emergency scenarios, such as ammonia leaks, while Fincke and Yui uninstalled science hardware for transport. Following undocking, the Dragon spacecraft is scheduled for a parachute-assisted splashdown off the California coast on Thursday, January 15, at approximately 3:40 a.m. EST.
