The Crew-13 mission aims to reach the space station in under nine hours
In short: As NASA and SpaceX prepare for the Crew-13 launch, the mission timeline is remarkably tight. From a Florida liftoff to docking at the International Space Station, the Dragon spacecraft is expected to complete its journey to the orbital outpost in less than nine hours.
Scheduled for an October 1 departure from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Space Launch Complex 40, the Crew-13 mission involves NASA and SpaceX. The crew consists of pilot Luke Delaney, NASA commander Jessica Watkins, Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk. To mitigate the risk of illness before departure, the four astronauts are currently undergoing a standard preflight quarantine at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. The mission is set to depart from Space Launch Complex 40. This specific launch window is scheduled for 11:10 a.m. EDT.
Upon arrival, the crew will join the Expedition 75 team. This long-duration mission involves conducting scientific research, maintaining the orbiting laboratory, and supporting technology demonstrations. On the station, Expedition 75 members are already preparing for the arrival; for instance, station commander Jessica Meir has been reorganizing cargo within the Harmony module's pressurized mating adapter-2 to create space for the incoming Dragon spacecraft.
While Crew-13 prepares for flight, the station remains a hub of active research. Current activities include testing the European Enhanced Exploration Exercise Device (E4D) to help maintain crew fitness for future missions to the Moon and Mars, and studying how microgravity affects human cognition and the microcirculatory system. Other research involves testing specialized equipment, such as a lower body negative pressure suit designed to help crews adjust to Earth's gravity by reversing fluid shifts caused by weightlessness. Flight engineer Sophie Adenot has been conducting experiments in the Columbus laboratory module. She has also been using the E4D device to simulate exercise cycles.
