How a unique space observatory captures the most energetic X-rays in the universe.

NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, known as NuSTAR, represents a breakthrough in high-energy astronomy. This talk explores how the mission has spent nearly ten years observing the most violent phenomena in space, including black holes and stellar explosions, to fundamentally change our understanding of the cosmos.

Launched to provide focused high-energy X-ray imaging, NuSTAR allows scientists to peer into the mechanics of extreme environments that were previously difficult to observe. By capturing data from active galaxies and supernova remnants, the mission has provided fresh insights into the behavior of matter under intense gravitational and thermal pressure.

As of the presentation on May 26, 2022, the mission had been operational for nearly a decade. Principal Mission Scientist Dr. Brian Grefenstette details how these specialized observations help map the high-energy landscape of the universe, offering a clearer picture of the processes driving cosmic evolution.
