Monitoring the 70% of our planet that dictates our climate

Sentinel-3 for oceans · 3:40 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: The oceans are the primary drivers of global weather and transport. This video explores how the Sentinel-3 satellite mission provides the high-quality data necessary to monitor ocean health and atmospheric conditions from space.

The Sentinel-3 mission, a part of the Copernicus program, utilizes two satellites (3A and 3B) orbiting at 815 kilometres to track ocean color, sea surface temperature, and sea surface height. Because oceans cover 70% of the planet, these measurements are vital for understanding global climate patterns and resource management.

Managed by EUMETSAT in cooperation with the ESA, the mission also captures atmospheric data on air quality, clouds, and fires. To ensure data continuity into the 2030s, two additional satellites, Sentinel-3C and -3D, are scheduled for future launch.
