How Europe monitors the pulse of our planet from space

Sentinel-3 mission overview · 3:54 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: This video introduces the Sentinel-3 mission, a vital component of the Copernicus programme. Discover how these satellites provide precise measurements of Earth's oceans, ice, land, and atmosphere to support global environmental monitoring.

Operating at an altitude of 815 kilometres, the Sentinel-3 mission employs two satellites, 3A and 3B, within a sun-synchronous, near polar orbit. To gather precise data, these instruments measure sea surface height, sea surface temperature, and global ocean colour.

Beyond the oceans, the mission monitors air quality, clouds, and fires. While ESA delivers land and non-time critical atmospheric products, EUMETSAT processes marine and near-real time atmospheric data. To ensure data continuity into the 2030s, future launches of Sentinel-3C and -3D are planned.
