A new perspective on Earth: the launch of Sentinel-2A
In short: Watch the final preparations and liftoff of Sentinel-2A from French Guiana. This mission uses advanced multispectral imaging to monitor vegetation, food security, and environmental disasters across the globe.
Launched on 23 June 2015 via a Vega rocket, Sentinel-2A is a key component of the European Copernicus programme. It works alongside Sentinel-2B as part of a two-satellite constellation designed for high-resolution environmental monitoring.
The satellite carries an innovative multispectral imager featuring 13 spectral bands. This technology provides critical data for managing agriculture, forestry, and food security, while also tracking pollution in coastal waters and lakes. Additionally, the mission supports humanitarian relief by mapping disasters such as floods, landslides, and volcanic eruptions.
