A stadium-sized crater marks a seven-year milestone for a Martian rover
In short: NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity is celebrating its seventh anniversary on the Red Planet. This video captures a unique vantage point of the rover positioned at the rim of a massive crater, highlighting its enduring journey of exploration.
NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter utilized the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera to take pictures of the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity. The imagery, captured on December 31, 2010, shows the rover on the southwestern rim of the Santa Maria crater.
The crater measures approximately 100 meters in diameter, roughly the size of a football field. Opportunity is scheduled to spend several weeks exploring this site during a month that serves as a significant milestone for both it and its twin rover, Spirit, as they celebrate seven years of operation on Mars.
