In short: Astronomers developing the Binary Population and Spectral Synthesis (BPASS) models have released a new version that accurately simulates how binary stars evolve. By incorporating the effects of mass transfer between stars, the researchers found their models can reproduce the colors and properties of both nearby star clusters and much more distant, unresolved galaxies.

The study tested the model suite against photometric and spectroscopic observations of stellar populations in both the local and distant Universe. While the models provide a self-consistent explanation for galaxy properties across a wide range of redshifts, the authors note that the models still have limitations that require future improvements.

Why it matters: Accurate modeling of binary star interactions is essential for understanding the light we observe from distant galaxies.
