Space Station Crew Member Pays Tribute to His Hometown from Orbit · 21:00 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst shares a unique perspective from the International Space Station, bridging the gap between orbital life and his roots in Kunzelsau, Germany.

During Expedition 40, flight engineer Alexander Gerst hosted an in-flight event on September 4, 2014, to speak with dignitaries and residents of his hometown, Kunzelsau. This interaction highlights the rare opportunity for crew members to maintain personal connections with their communities while conducting long-duration space missions.

Gerst arrived at the space station in late May 2014 for a mission lasting approximately five and a half months. His journey is scheduled to conclude in early November 2014 with a landing in Kazakhstan aboard the Russian Soyuz TMA-13M spacecraft.
