Preparing for orbit: the pre-launch rituals of Expedition 39 and 40
In short: Before departing for the International Space Station, the Expedition 39 and 40 crew members gathered in Russia to honor space pioneers and undergo final training preparations.
Footage shows the team at Russia's Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City during a March 6 press briefing. Following this, the astronauts and cosmonauts visited Red Square in Moscow to lay flowers at the Kremlin Wall, paying tribute to iconic Russian space heroes interred there.
The mission crew includes Alexander Skvortsov, Steve Swanson, and Oleg Artemyev, alongside backups Alexander Samokutyaev, Barry Wilmore, and Elena Serova. On March 26, the crew will depart from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome aboard the Soyuz TMA-12M for a six-month trip to the International Space Station.
