How astronauts use virtual reality to maintain mental and physical health in space
ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen demonstrates how virtual reality technology is being tested on the International Space Station to support astronaut well-being. By simulating nature and interactive exercise environments, these experiments aim to help crew members manage the psychological and physical challenges of living in orbit.
The International Space Station currently hosts two primary virtual reality experiments. The Virtual Assistance Mental Balance (VAMB) project provides astronauts with immersive, tranquil nature settings designed to foster relaxation. This is particularly relevant for maintaining mental equilibrium during long-duration space missions.
Additionally, the VR for Exercise initiative integrates the station's stationary bike with a headset that displays various cycling routes through Denmark. This setup has proven popular with the crew, transforming routine physical training into a more engaging experience while helping astronauts maintain their fitness levels in microgravity.
