Meet the 130-ton transporter moving the world's most precise space antennas

The ALMA Observatory requires extreme precision to position its massive antennas. This video showcases the maiden rollout of a specialized transporter, an engineering marvel designed to move 115-ton equipment across the Atacama Desert with millimeter-level accuracy.

The ALMA antenna transporter is a heavy-duty vehicle built to navigate the challenging terrain of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Measuring 10 meters wide, 20 meters long, and 6 meters high, this machine relies on 28 individual tires to distribute its 130-ton weight.

Despite its massive scale, the transporter is engineered for delicate work. It possesses the power equivalent of two Formula 1 engines, allowing it to carry a 115-ton antenna and place it onto a concrete pad with precision measured in mere millimeters.
