How Europe's massive cargo ship supports life aboard the International Space Station
In short: In October 2013, ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano hosted a live broadcast from the International Space Station to honor the Automated Transfer Vehicle Albert Einstein. This mission highlights the critical role of European resupply vessels in maintaining the station's crew and operations.
The ATV-4, named Albert Einstein, arrived at the International Space Station in June 2013. It carried over 7 tons of essential cargo, including fuel, food, and various supplies required for the station's ongoing operations. During a live event on 24 October 2013, astronaut Luca Parmitano connected with university students across Italy, Germany, and Israel to discuss the vehicle's contributions.
Following its mission, the spacecraft was scheduled to undock on 28 October 2013. Its final act involved a controlled, destructive re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, targeting an uninhabited region of the Pacific Ocean to ensure a safe disposal.
