The invisible threads connecting Mediterranean volcanoes are moving magma
In short: Is the Mediterranean's recent seismic chaos a series of coincidences or a connected geological pulse? From Santorini to Italy, thousands of earthquakes have sparked fears. New research suggests these aren't just random tremors; they may be the audible footsteps of massive magma movements deep beneath the seafloor.
In early 2025, the Mediterranean region experienced a significant seismic crisis. In Greece, the island of Santorini was rocked by more than 28,000 earthquakes in just over a month. While these events initially left experts debating whether the cause was tectonic—related to the shifting African and Hellenic plates—or volcanic, new data from the GFZ Helmholtz Center for Geosciences and others suggests a magmatic origin.
By employing ocean floor tools alongside AI techniques, scientists discovered that roughly 300 million cubic metres of magma ascended from the lower crust near the Kolumbo submarine volcano. This molten material came to rest about four kilometers below the ocean floor, generating thousands of tremors during its ascent. The study highlights a 'coupled' system where activity at Santorini is linked to nearby volcanic structures, creating a complex web of underground pressure.
Simultaneously, Italy’s Campi Flegrei region—home to over 500,000 people—has seen intensifying unrest since 2018. Using a new AI model from Stanford University, scientists have detected four times as many earthquakes as previous tools could identify. By pinpointing these hidden faults in near real time, researchers aim to provide better risk mitigation for one of the world's most densely populated volcanic areas.
These findings underscore the difficulty of forecasting volcanic hazards. Because magma migration involves cascading interactions between crustal breaking and fluid movement, integrating high-resolution earthquake locations with surface displacement data is now essential. Understanding these 'invisible threads' allows for more precise emergency responses in regions where the Earth refuses to stay still.
