The first human object to travel one light-day from Earth
In short: Voyager 1 is approaching a historic distance milestone that marks a new frontier for human engineering. This video explores the spacecraft's journey into interstellar space and the specific physical distance it is about to surpass.
On November 18, 2026, Voyager 1 will reach a distance of 16.094 billion miles (25.902 billion kilometers) from Earth. This distance is significant because it represents one light-day—the distance light travels in 24 hours. It will be the first human-made object to ever reach this point.
Voyager 1 and its twin, Voyager 2, are currently the only spacecraft operating outside the heliosphere, the Sun's protective bubble of magnetic fields and particles. While many of its instruments have been turned off to conserve power or due to degradation, it continues to provide unique data from the cosmos.
