A season of historic triumphs and the end of an era
In short: Real Madrid’s 2022–23 campaign was defined by record-breaking silverware and profound transitions. While the club secured international dominance, they simultaneously navigated the departure of legendary figures, marking the conclusion of several iconic tenures that had shaped the club's identity for over a decade.
The season began with a display of continental authority. Defending their European crown, Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2–0 during the UEFA Super Cup, featuring goals from Karim Benzema and David Alaba. This victory allowed the club to equal a record of five European Super Cup titles, a feat shared with Milan and Barcelona. The club further extended its global dominance in February 2023, claiming a record-fifth FIFA Club World Cup title after a 5–3 victory against Al-Hilal.
However, this period of success coincided with significant structural shifts in the squad. The club faced the departure of long-serving captain Marcelo, who left after 15 years and 25 titles, the most of any player in the club's history. The roster also saw the exits of Casemiro, who moved to Manchester United after nine years, and the end of long-term tenures for Gareth Bale and Isco, both of whom had spent nine seasons with the club. These departures marked the first time since several previous seasons that such foundational players were absent simultaneously.
Domestically, the campaign was a rollercoaster of high-scoring victories and sudden setbacks. While the club achieved a historic 4–0 away win against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-finals—their first such margin at the Camp Nou since 1963—they also experienced significant losses, including a defeat to Manchester City in the Champions League semi-finals. The season ultimately concluded with the club finishing second in La Liga, following a 1–1 draw against Athletic Bilbao, which served as the final appearance for Karim Benzema, the club's outright second-highest goalscorer.
