From royal retreats to greyhound tracks: the evolving sporting landscape of Ashby
In short: Ashby-de-la-Zouch has transitioned from a 19th-century spa destination into a diverse hub for local athletics. While its history is rooted in the strategic importance of its castle, today the town supports everything from premier club cricket to high-stakes road racing and community football.
The town's sporting identity is deeply intertwined with its historical evolution. In the 1820s, Ashby emerged as a popular spa destination, a status bolstered by the construction of the Ivanhoe Baths in 1822 and the Royal Hotel in 1826 to accommodate visitors. This era of leisure helped lay the groundwork for the town's recreational infrastructure.
Today, the sporting scene is multifaceted. The Ashby Hastings Cricket Club, founded before 1831, remains a cornerstone of the community, hosting Leicestershire CCC 2nd XI matches at the Bath Grounds. The town also supports rugby through Ashby RFC, which competes in the Midland 3 East (North) league, and various other clubs for hockey, bridge, and football, such as the Ashby United Community Football Club.
The town's athletic history also includes more ephemeral pursuits. In 1931, a greyhound racing track opened, operating as an independent 'flapping' track with races held on Tuesday and Saturday evenings. This track likely closed around 1935. In the modern era, the Ivanhoe Runners have become a prominent fixture, organizing the annual Ashby 20-mile road race. This event, which has held a Gold BARR grading since 2006, has become a significant fixture on the athletics calendar, often used by runners as preparation for the London Marathon.
Beyond organized club sports, the landscape includes the Willesley Park Golf Course, which opened in April 1921 and covers 230 acres of rolling countryside and heathland.
