How a phoenix club survived the loss of its home and identity
In short: When the original Rushden & Diamonds was liquidated in 2011, supporters refused to let the club die. They formed a new, fan-owned phoenix club, but survival meant a nomadic existence, playing across various grounds while fighting to reclaim their place in English football.
The birth of AFC Rushden & Diamonds was a direct response to the collapse of the original club, which was expelled from the Football Conference and liquidated in July 2011. Formed by supporters via the SaveRDFC group, the new entity was designed to be fully owned and controlled by its fans. This transition was not seamless; the club initially struggled with administrative hurdles, failing to register a senior side in time for its inaugural 2011–12 season and instead fielding a youth team in the Northants Senior Youth League.
The club's early years were defined by a nomadic existence as they searched for a permanent home. They began at Kiln Park, the home of Raunds Town, before entering a long-term groundshare at the Dog & Duck with Wellingborough Town from July 2012 until the summer of 2017. This arrangement ended abruptly when the landlord, Alper Ozdogan, invoked a lease clause, forcing Wellingborough Town to vacate the ground by May 31, 2017. Following a member vote, the club moved to Hayden Road to groundshare with Rushden & Higham United for the 2017–18 season.
Despite these logistical challenges, the club has seen significant sporting milestones. They secured their first major honour in the 2014–15 season by winning the United Counties League Premier Division title. While the club has faced periods of severe instability, including relegation and financial struggles in 2022, they have also experienced remarkable recoveries, such as the 2023–24 'Great Escape,' where they avoided back-to-back relegations due to the demise of Loughborough Dynamo. Today, the club continues to build toward stability, having secured a 30-year lease from the Duchy of Lancaster in November 2018 for new facilities near the B645 Chelveston Road.
