From championship dynasty to a record-breaking losing streak
In short: The Edmonton Elks represent the extreme highs and lows of professional sport. Once a dominant force that won five consecutive Grey Cups, the franchise has recently faced unprecedented struggles, including a North American professional sports record for consecutive playoff appearances and a dubious record for consecutive home losses.
Founded in 1949 as the Edmonton Eskimos, the franchise became a cornerstone of Canadian football. The team achieved legendary status during the late 1970s and early 1980s, securing five consecutive Grey Cup championships between 1978 and 1982. This era of dominance, led by quarterback Warren Moon and head coach Hugh Campbell, helped earn Edmonton the nickname "City of Champions" alongside the success of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers.
The team's history is marked by extreme statistical outliers. On one end of the spectrum, the franchise achieved a remarkable 34 consecutive playoff appearances from 1972 to 2005. On the other, the team recently set a dubious North American professional sports record for the longest winless home streak, which reached 22 games between October 26, 2019, and August 10, 2023.
In 2020, the club underwent a significant rebranding, retiring the "Eskimos" name due to controversies surrounding the term's historical application to Inuit people. Following pressure from sponsors and support from Indigenous groups like Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, the team officially became the Edmonton Elks on June 1, 2021. This transition included a shift in branding, moving from the former name to a new identity that incorporates a stylized elk logo.
Ownership of the club has also seen a historic shift. For decades, the team was community-owned by local shareholders. However, in 2024, Larry Thompson became the first private owner in the club's history. Following Thompson's death on September 25, 2025, the team's ownership passed to his estate.
