The only coach to win NCAA championships in both men's and women's tennis
In short: Bryan Shelton has mastered the art of championship coaching across different divisions. After a professional playing career that saw him reach a world ranking of 55, he transitioned into a coaching dynasty, achieving a rare feat by securing national titles for both men's and women's collegiate programs.
Bryan Shelton's journey from a standout collegiate athlete to a premier coach is marked by significant milestones in American tennis. Born in Huntsville, Alabama, on December 22, 1965, Shelton played for Georgia Tech from 1985 to 1988, where he was an All-American in 1988 and an ACC singles champion in 1985. Between 1989 and 1997, he competed professionally, claiming singles trophies in Newport during 1991 and 1992, while also making the 1992 French Open mixed doubles final with Lori McNeil.
His coaching career is defined by unprecedented success in the NCAA. In July 1999, Shelton began leading the Georgia Tech women's tennis team, taking them from a program that had never qualified for the NCAA tournament to winning the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship in 2007. This achievement earned him the ITA Coach of the Year title that same year. He later moved to the University of Florida, serving as the head coach for the men's tennis team starting in June 2012, where he guided them to an NCAA Championship in 2021.
By winning national titles in both men's and women's NCAA Division I Tennis, Shelton has achieved a distinction unique among head coaches. In 2023, he shifted his focus from collegiate coaching to the professional circuit, stepping down from his university roles to coach his son, Ben Shelton. This transition marks a new chapter for a man whose career has been defined by elite-level competition and championship-winning leadership.
