How a pub-founded club survived a High Court winding-up order
In short: Founded in a pub in 1885, Hyde United has weathered everything from financial ruin to a High Court winding-up order. From a controversial league title to a dramatic supporters' takeover, the history of this Greater Manchester club is a masterclass in survival and resilience.
Hyde United's roots trace back to 27 July 1885, when the club was founded at the White Lion pub in Hyde, Greater Manchester. After an initial period playing near the Bankfield Hotel, the club moved to Townend Street in 1898. Following a merger in 1906 and the club folding in 1917, the current Hyde United was re-established in 1919 to meet local demands for a football team.
The club's history is marked by significant highs and precarious lows. They enjoyed a successful period in the 1950s, winning the Cheshire Senior Cup in 1946 and the League Cup in 1953. A major milestone occurred in 2005 when Hyde won the Northern Premier League Premier Division title, though the victory was controversial. The title was originally awarded to Farsley Celtic due to Spennymoor United's inability to complete fixtures, but Hyde won the title on appeal after being awarded three points for a '0–0 win' against Spennymoor.
In 2009, the club's existence was threatened when London's High Court ordered it to be wound up due to owing roughly £122,000 to HM Revenue and Customs. However, a massive community effort—including a bucket collection at a Manchester City match—raised enough funds to rescind the order. This paved the way for a 2015 takeover by the Hyde United Supporters Club, after businessman John Manship agreed to write off loans worth roughly £500,000 to facilitate the transition.
Today, the club plays at Ewen Fields, a stadium with a capacity of 4,250. While the ground has seen various transformations—including a shift from red to blue in 2010 as part of a Manchester City sponsorship deal—it remains the home of a club that has navigated the complexities of English non-league football for over a century.
