In short: Fotis Ioannidis redefined what it means to be a late bloomer in professional football. After three seasons of failing to make an impression at Panathinaikos, he transformed into a prolific goalscorer, eventually commanding a fee that shattered his club's historical transfer records.

Born on January 10, 2000, Ioannidis began his professional journey with a modest start. He scored his first goal for his club on December 10, 2018, and notably contributed a last-minute header on February 24, 2019, to help his team avoid relegation. Despite these early contributions, his trajectory was not immediate. He spent his first three seasons at Panathinaikos without making a significant impact on the pitch. The turning point arrived during the 2023–24 season. Under the management of Ivan Jovanović, Ioannidis solidified his place in the starting lineup. His breakthrough was punctuated by a goal against Villarreal in September 2023, which triggered a surge of interest from across Europe. He finished that campaign with 23 goals and 9 assists in all competitions, earning him the Super League Greece Footballer of the Season and Team of the Season titles for two consecutive years (2022–23 and 2023–24). His father, Vasilios, was also a professional international player who competed for Apollon Pontus, Olympiacos, and Panionios. Ioannidis also represented the Greece national team. He notably scored twice against Finland during the UEFA Nations League.

His market value skyrocketed as a result of this evolution. While Panathinaikos rejected a €2 million offer from an MLS club in February 2022, they later demanded over €10 million from various European suitors. This culminated in a historic move to Sporting CP on September 1, 2025. The deal, valued at €22 million plus €3 million in performance bonuses, became the most expensive in Panathinaikos' history, surpassing the previous record set by Georgios Vagiannidis earlier that same summer.
