From continental champions to dissolution: the meteoric rise and fall of Guangzhou FC
In short: In a decade, Guangzhou FC transformed from a relegated side into a continental powerhouse, winning two AFC Champions League titles. Yet, fueled by massive investment from the Evergrande Real Estate Group, the club's rapid ascent ended in a crushing financial collapse and total disbandment.
The trajectory of Guangzhou FC is a dramatic study in the impact of massive capital injection on sports. Following a 2009 match-fixing scandal that resulted in relegation, the club was purchased in February 2010 by the Evergrande Real Estate Group for ¥100 million. This investment triggered an unprecedented era of domestic dominance, including seven consecutive Chinese Super League titles between 2011 and 2017. The club's transformation began after they were re-established in 1961. This resurgence was supported by significant funding from the e-commerce giant Alibaba Group.
This financial surge propelled the club onto the global stage. Guangzhou became the most successful Chinese club in continental competitions, securing two AFC Champions League titles in 2013 and 2015. These victories earned them spots in the FIFA Club World Cup, where they faced giants like Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
However, the high-stakes model proved unsustainable. By 2015, despite being valued at US$282 million—the highest among Chinese football teams—the club reported an operating loss exceeding US$200 million. The instability of the Chinese property sector, driven by the Evergrande Group's financial crisis, eventually crippled the club. After being relegated from the Super League in 2022, Guangzhou FC was officially expelled from professional leagues in January 2025 due to an inability to repay high debts, leading to its dissolution. The club's downfall was exacerbated by the cancellation of their new 100,000-capacity stadium project in mid-2022. This failure was directly linked to the broader crisis within the Chinese property sector.
