In short: Before the Super Bowl, determining an NFL champion was anything but certain. With no formal playoff system and inconsistent rules, the league's first decades were marked by disputed titles, strange indoor games on dirt, and controversial decisions that still spark debate in the record books today.

From its founding in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association, the NFL lacked a standardized postseason. During the 'League Standings era' (1920–1932), champions were determined simply by winning percentage, excluding ties. This lack of structure led to four disputed titles in the first six seasons alone. For instance, in 1920, the Akron Pros were awarded the first championship via the Brunswick-Balke Collender Cup after other teams petitioned for a share of the title. In 1925, a controversy involving the Pottsville Maroons and the Chicago Cardinals remains unresolved; the Cardinals were awarded the title after the Maroons were suspended, but the Cardinals later vacated the championship, only to reclaim it decades later.

The landscape shifted in 1932 when a tie between the Chicago Bears and Portsmouth Spartans necessitated a game played indoors at Chicago Stadium. To accommodate the 80-yard dirt field, the league implemented temporary rule changes, including moving goal posts to the goal line and allowing forward passes from anywhere behind the line of scrimmage. This successful experiment led to the 'NFL Championship Game era' (1933–1965), where the league moved to a divisional structure with scheduled postseason games.

The era of the Super Bowl began in 1966 following the merger of the NFL and the AFL. Throughout these three distinct eras, the league's record books have remained consistent, treating all championships as equal. To this day, the Green Bay Packers hold the record for the most titles with 13, followed by the Chicago Bears with 9 and the New York Giants with 8.
