The youngest head coach in modern NFL history faced a fiery exit
In short: Lane Kiffin broke records before he could build a legacy. At 31, he became the youngest head coach in modern NFL history, only to face a public firing that left him with a vacated record and a reputation for high-stakes controversy.
In 2007, Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis hired 31-year-old Lane Kiffin, making him the youngest head coach in the modern NFL era (since 1946). While Davis had a history of hiring young coaches—including John Madden and Mike Shanahan—Kiffin’s tenure was brief and tumultuous. After a 4–12 debut season, Davis fired Kiffin over the phone in September 2008, publicly accusing him of being a "flat-out liar" and bringing "disgrace" to the organization. An arbitrator later ruled the firing was for cause, though Kiffin maintained he was unfairly targeted. Kiffin’s career is defined by rapid movement and significant NCAA scrutiny. Joining the University of Tennessee from the Raiders, he attained the status of Division I FBS's youngest active head coach at 33. However, his stay in Knoxville lasted only one year before he departed for USC in 2010. His tenure at USC was overshadowed by a four-year investigation into Reggie Bush, which resulted in the NCAA vacating all of the team's 2005 wins and imposing a two-year postseason ban. Beyond the record books, Kiffin’s career has been marked by outspoken moments. At a 2009 booster breakfast, he publicly accused Urban Meyer of recruiting violations, leading to a public reprimand from the SEC for mentioning a recruit by name. He also faced allegations of making disparaging remarks to a high school recruit about the University of South Carolina. These incidents, combined with his rapid coaching transitions, have made Kiffin one of the most polarizing and high-profile figures in contemporary football.
