The youngest head coach in the country became a lightning rod for controversy
In short: At just 25 years old, Rich Rodriguez was the youngest college head coach in America. His career would later span legendary wins at West Virginia and high-profile struggles at Michigan, defined by innovative offenses, massive legal battles, and intense NCAA investigations.
Rodriguez's ascent began rapidly. After playing defensive back at West Virginia University, he took the helm at Salem College in 1988. While his first season as a head coach resulted in a 2–8 record, he later found significant success at Glenville State from 1990 to 1996, leading the team to four conference championships and earning multiple Coach of the Year honors.
His tenure at West Virginia University (WVU) saw both incredible heights and bitter endings. In 2005, he led the Mountaineers to a Big East title and a victory in the Sugar Bowl, finishing the season ranked fifth in the nation. However, his 2007 departure to the University of Michigan triggered a legal war. WVU filed a motion in Monongalia County Circuit Court alleging breach of contract regarding a $4 million buyout clause. The dispute was eventually settled in 2008, with Michigan paying $2.5 million and Rodriguez personally paying $1.5 million to the university.
The Michigan era was marked by turbulence. His inaugural 2008 season was the program's worst in 33 years, finishing 3–9. Beyond the field, the program faced allegations of NCAA rule violations, including exceeding practice time limits and using graduate assistants improperly. While Rodriguez denied the claims, the NCAA investigation led to self-imposed sanctions and an additional year of probation for the Wolverines. By 2013, public opinion of his time in West Virginia remained largely unfavorable, with 4 Му5% of voters holding an unfavorable view.
