In short: To move beyond the 'flat' look of contemporary high-definition games, developers spent a year building a custom engine from scratch. They wanted light to bounce realistically between objects, a feat so demanding it required distributed rendering across hundreds of computers to calculate just a few days of gameplay.

Sonic Team launched the creation of Sonic Unleashed in 2005, originally planning it as a Sonic Adventure 2 successor known as Sonic World Adventure. However, the team introduced enough innovations to warrant a new identity. A core technical goal for director Yoshihisa Hashimoto was achieving a global illumination solution—where light reflects from one object onto others. To do this, the team built the Hedgehog Engine, spending a full year figuring out the technical requirements for high-end hardware like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The scale of these lighting maps was so massive that the team initially considered splitting the game across multiple discs for the Xbox 360. Instead, they chose to reduce the resolution to fit the entire game onto a single disc. To blend characters and enemies into these pre-calculated environments, they utilized "Light Field" technology. This allowed the game to feature massive action stages ranging from 8 to 20 kilometers in size, with the lighting for each stage taking about two to three days to calculate.

The game's structure was split into two distinct styles to balance traditional speed with new mechanics. Daytime levels featured Sonic's trademark speed, including 2D side-scrolling sections and a "Sonic Boost" mechanic. Night-time levels saw Sonic transform into the "Werehog," a werewolf-like affliction that traded speed for brute strength and a brawler-style combat system. Because of hardware limitations, the game was developed in two "silos": one for high-definition consoles and a modified version for the PlayStation 2 and Wii.
