How a steelworks merger created a South Yorkshire footballing mainstay
In short: Born from the union of a local works team and Oxley Park Sports, Stocksbridge Park Steels F.C. has spent decades navigating the English football pyramid. From near-record victories to stadium-based promotion hurdles, the club's history is a testament to community-driven resilience and local industrial roots.
The club's identity is deeply rooted in the industrial heritage of Stocksbridge, South Yorkshire. Formed in 1986 through a merger between Oxley Park Sports and Stocksbridge Works—the team of the local British Steel Corporation plant—the club has been a fixture of the Northern Counties East League since its inception. Their home, Bracken Moor, has evolved from a cricket pitch into a dedicated football ground following its purchase by a local steelmaking company after the Second World War.
The Steels' journey through the leagues has been marked by significant highs and frustrating setbacks. In 1996, they earned promotion to the Northern Premier League (NPL) Division One, but their ascent was initially hampered by infrastructure requirements; despite finishing second in the division in 1996, they were denied promotion because their stadium did not meet the necessary standards. They eventually reached the NPL Premier Division in 2009, though they were relegated back to Division One South in 2014.
On the pitch, the club has seen remarkable individual and collective feats. In August 2002, the Steels recorded a club-record 17–1 victory over Oldham Town in the FA Cup preliminary round, with striker Paul Jackson scoring ten goals in that single match. Despite frequent changes in leadership, such as the extended periods of Wayne Biggins and Mick Horne, the club has stayed competitive, lately winning the 2024–25 Division One East play-offs to earn promotion to step three.
The club's stadium, currently known as the Eco-Power Stadium, also tells a story of local synergy. The main stand features a distinctive angled awning with seating sourced from Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough Stadium. Even the club's crest, which features a clock tower from Nanny Hill, serves as a permanent link to the local landscape.
