Transforming digital weather data into a beautiful, physical analog display
This project demonstrates how to bridge the gap between web-based data and physical hardware. By using a Particle Photon to pull live weather information from the internet, you can visualize atmospheric conditions through custom-designed analog panel meters, turning abstract digital numbers into a tangible, desktop-ready weather station.
The project utilizes the Particle Photon, a compact microcontroller equipped with integrated Wi-Fi capabilities, functioning similarly to an Arduino. The system fetches real-time weather information from Forecast.io and translates these values into physical movement on analog panel meters. To house the electronics, the creator used a piece of walnut, while the custom meter faces were drafted using the free CAD software, DraftSight.
Attention to detail is critical for accuracy; the creator noted a calibration error in the initial barometer design, where the scale was shifted by 100 millibar. A corrected range of 960 to 1060 millibar is recommended to properly represent standard atmospheric pressure variations.
