In short: In 2008, Hyundai shocked the automotive world by launching its first rear-wheel drive sports coupe. Designed to rival established icons like the Ford Mustang and Infiniti G37, this vehicle served as a high-performance laboratory, eventually setting production-car records at Pikes Peak and winning US touring championships.

Launched in Korea in October 2008 and arriving in the U.S. as a 2010 model, the Genesis Coupe was built on the same platform as the luxury Genesis sedan. It was a strategic move to establish Hyundai's performance credentials, featuring a longitudinal engine layout and rear-wheel drive. Early spy photos from 2007 even teased a turbocharged four-cylinder and a potential V8 engine, fueling massive anticipation before its official unveiling at the 2008 New York International Auto Show.

The car offered a diverse mechanical palette, ranging from a 2.0T turbocharged four-cylinder to a 3.8L V6. For enthusiasts, the R-Spec trims stripped away luxuries like Bluetooth and cruise control to save weight, instead adding 19-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, and a Torsen limited-slip differential. In 2013, the model received a significant overhaul, replacing the Lambda MPi engine with a GDi version and introducing an 8-speed automatic with paddle-shifters, while also improving interior material quality to address earlier criticisms.

Beyond the showroom, the Genesis Coupe became a legitimate racing pedigree. In a joint venture with Rhys Millen, it set a new record for two-wheel drive production cars at Pikes Peak in July 2009. It also secured a historic victory in the 2014 United States Touring Car Championship, marking the first time a Hyundai won a road racing championship in the U.S. Despite mixed reviews regarding its 'peaky' power delivery and brake fade, it remained a pivotal bridge between Hyundai's economy roots and its luxury aspirations.
