In short: The Hyundai Tiburon wasn't just a budget sports car; it was a masterclass in brand evolution. From co-developing suspension with Porsche to hosting limited editions designed by McLaren F1 stylist Peter Stevens, this model bridged the gap between affordable transport and legitimate enthusiast engineering.

Launched in late 1996 as a 1997 model, the Tiburon (known as the Coupe in Europe) was a front-wheel-drive sports coupe that embodied a revival of 1960s and 1970s 'coke bottle' styling. While it served as a mainstream offering, its engineering pedigree was surprisingly high. For instance, the MacPherson strut suspension on the original RD generation was co-developed with Porsche. In the United States, it launched with a 1.8L engine, but quickly moved to a 2.0L four-cylinder that produced 140 hp, offering a power-to-weight ratio that actually surpassed the newer 2.0L GK generation.

The car's legacy is defined by its diverse regional identities and high-end collaborations. In the UK, Hyundai leveraged its entry into the Formula 2 World Rally Championship to release the 'F2' and 'F2 Evolution' models. The 'F2 Evolution,' specifically, was a limited run of 1,513 units featuring a design led by Peter Stevens. These models received mechanical upgrades like a high-lift inlet camshaft from the Lantra engine and a freeflow exhaust from Magnex, a supplier to Aston Martin, pushing power to 154 hp.

For collectors, the Tiburon offered extreme exclusivity. Australia saw the release of the 'TS' (Tiger Shark) editions, which paid homage to the 'Tiburon' (Spanish for shark) name. Only 80 units of the 2005 TS were produced in a unique 'tiger orange' paint, each featuring an individually numbered ID plate. By the time the model was replaced by the Veloster in 2008, it had transitioned from a stylistic experiment into a vehicle that balanced niche enthusiast appeal with global production scale.
