The 1900 rematch: How economic prosperity and war victory secured McKinley's second term
In short: In 1900, the American electorate faced a choice between the stability of an incumbent and the radical vision of a magnetic orator. While one candidate championed the gold standard, the other promised a revolution in silver, setting the stage for a decisive electoral victory.
The 1900 United States presidential election, held on November 6, was a rematch of the 1896 contest between Republican incumbent William McKinley and Democrat William Jennings Bryan. McKinley entered the race with a significant advantage, bolstered by a well-financed Republican machine and a nation experiencing a return to economic prosperity. His victory was further supported by the recent success of the Spanish–American War, allowing him to capture 51.6% of the popular vote and secure 271 electoral votes.
Bryan, a charismatic leader from the Midwest, represented the interests of agrarian populations in opposition to the urban East. A gifted debater known for his 'Cross of Gold' speech, Bryan campaigned on a 'bimetallism' platform, advocating for the unlimited coinage of silver at a 16 to 1 ratio with gold to alleviate the economic depression following the 1893 panic. Despite his ability to attract large crowds across 27 states, his anti-imperialist stance and continued focus on silver limited his reach, resulting in only 176 electoral votes.
The Republican ticket saw unexpected changes following the death of Vice President Garret Hobart in 1899. New York Governor Theodore Roosevelt was selected as McKinley's running mate, a move influenced by party boss Thomas C. Platt to remove Roosevelt from New York politics. This political maneuvering set the stage for one of history's most significant transitions: when McKinley was assassinated in Buffalo, New York, in 1901, Roosevelt ascended to the presidency.
