The sanctuary of the Highlands: A peninsula defined by isolation
In short: For centuries, the Applecross peninsula was a world apart, accessible only by boat. This extreme isolation preserved a unique wilderness heritage, from 7th-century monasteries to a landscape so rugged it forced a community to protest their own road access by withholding taxes.
The name Applecross is an anglicisation of the Pictish Aporcrosan, meaning 'confluence of the river Crossan'. This historical identity is deeply tied to the early Christian era. In 672, Saint Máel Ruba founded a monastery here in Pictish territory, serving as its first abbot until his death in 722. While the original monastery is gone, its presence is still marked by a sculptured stone and finely carved fragments preserved within the local parish church.
The peninsula's geography dictated its history of solitude. Until the early 19th century, the only way into Applecross was by sea. Even after roads appeared, the primary route remained the Bealach na Bà, a notoriously treacherous pass reaching 626 meters (2,054 feet). This isolation was so profound that the community's struggle for infrastructure was immortalized in the 1953 film Laxdale Hall, where residents protested poor road conditions by withholding their Road Tax.
Ownership of the land has shifted from religious to secular and private hands. During the Scottish Reformation in the late 16th century, the lands were secularised and granted to Clan Mackenzie around 1591. The estate saw a period of forfeiture between 1715 and 1724 due to the laird's involvement in the Jacobite rising of 1715. Today, the land is managed by the Applecross Trust, a charity dedicated to preserving the peninsula's 'wilderness heritage' and natural beauty.
