The superhero pilot that conquered iTunes after being rejected by the network
In short: In 2006, a high-budget superhero pilot was passed over by the newly formed CW Network. Yet, instead of vanishing, it became a digital phenomenon, proving that a dedicated fanbase can bypass traditional gatekeepers to turn a rejected concept into a number-one hit.
Developed by the creators of Smallville, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the Aquaman pilot was a massive undertaking with an estimated $7 million budget. In this retelling, the DC Comics figure becomes Arthur "A.C." Curry, a Florida Keys resident who uncovers his Atlantean royal lineage. The production utilized practical locations around Miami and Coconut Grove, even employing 482nd Fighter Wing Airmen as extras for scenes involving fighter aircraft.
The project's path to the public was unconventional. Originally intended for the fall 2006 schedule, the pilot was sidelined following the merger of The WB and UPN into the CW Network. Despite the network's decision not to buy the series, the creators pushed for a release. On July 24, 2006, the pilot was made available on iTunes in the United States. It immediately became the number-one most downloaded television show on the platform, marking a significant moment for digital distribution of non-network content.
While the pilot never transitioned into a full series, its elements were deeply rooted in existing television lore. The concept grew from a highly-rated Smallville episode titled "Aqua," which featured Arthur Curry. The pilot's narrative explored themes of identity and destiny, featuring a cast that included several Smallville alumni. Although the series was never greenlit, the pilot's success on digital marketplaces and its eventual airing on Canada's YTV demonstrated the growing power of the online audience.
